The Houston Birthing Connection focuses mainly on serving at-risk young women, ages twelve to nineteen years old, who are identified as likely to have a difficult time incorporating the challenges of parenthood into their lives, primarily those at risk of failing to graduate high school. These students face much opposition as they work to achieve their goals, having often already struggled against both personal and widespread social difficulties in order to meet the demands of school, employment, and family life. Many of these students face a family history of young parenthood, isolation from the community, and economic and social disadvantage. Many suffer from depression. Many are survivors of rape, incest, and other forms of sexual abuse. Still, no matter what personal circumstances they face, all of the Houston Birthing Connection's clients can benefit greatly from a non-judgmental ally to offer empathy and support during this difficult time.
